Commencement
With prayer, song and words of praise and mixed emotion the Regina Dominican community sent the class of 2008 off to their new lives as college and university students. Baccalaureate and Commencement Ceremonies were held on May 31, 2008 in the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium at the school.(story continued)

Convocation
The Regina Dominican High School Convocation was held on May 29 th in the O’Shaughnessy Theater. Sister Adrienne Piennette welcomed the graduates and families to the event and Principal Kathy Rzany greeted everyone. Awards were presented by Carol Kolodziej, Dean of Student Life, Verna Allworth, Senior Moderator and Patricia McDonell, Dean of Students.

This years Special Scholarships were awarded to the following Seniors: The Sullivan Award was awarded to Brigid Maniates (Chicago- 60640). This award is given to a Roman Catholic student who leads and promotes the religious and spiritual life in activities of Regina Dominican High School. The recipient models integration of liturgy, prayer and charitable works in her school and parish life. Brigid is a Youth Minister at St. Gertrude Parish in Chicago. She has been a member of the Youth Ministry Team at Regina Dominican for three years and has held positions on the team as Youth Ministry Chair and Service Co- Chair. She has been a Dominican Preacher for two years. She won the Archdiocese of Chicago, Vicariate II Youth Leadership Award. She was a member of the Peacebuilders Initiative her senior year. She sings in the Regina Dominican Liturgical Choir. In her junior and senior years at Regina Dominican she was a freshman retreat leader. As a senior she was a Kairos Retreat Leader. She is a member of NHS and received Highest Scholastic Honors for four years at Regina Dominican. She is a member of the National Social Studies League. She received the Liz Livingston Scholarship Award. All four years at Regina Dominican she received the Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service Award and the President Bush’s Volunteer Service Award. In 2006, she received the Field Museum of Chicago Service Award for over 200 hours of service. The total service house over her fours years at Regina are 1028.

The Maureen and Patrick Brannen Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Liz Anichini (Chicago- Edgebrook). The Saint Catherine of Siena Leadership Award was established by the Heirich Family in memory of Lyz Heirich, Class of ’63, was awarded to Liz Anichini (Chicago- Edgebrook). The recipient of this award is a senior who best exemplifies the spirit, love and commitment to service that Lyz shared with the Regina Dominican High School community. Mike Betlinski, college counselor, describes her as the face of Student Council, outgoing, enthusiastic, creative, motivated, and intellectual. Liz has provided leadership at Regina as a 4- year member of Student Council. She has held positions of representative, treasurer, and recording secretary and currently is Student Council President. She played volleyball her Frosh and Soph year and was a member of the soccer team as a freshman. A member of the NHS and the Spanish NHS, Liz participated in Mathletes and the WYSE team. Her outstanding leadership skills helped her organize a summer Habitat for Humanity trip for Regina Dominican this past summer.

The Roseanne Harrington award was awarded to Annice Coughlan (Chicago- 60631). The Harrington Family established this award in 1987 in memory of their beloved daughter and sister, Roseanne Harrington, Class of 1987. Each year we celebrate Roseanne’s life by recognizing a member of the senior class who most exemplifies Roseanne’s many accomplishments. Annice is an outstanding student, NHS member, who is a Peer Leader and active member of Campus Ministry. She is Director of Liturgy Music, and has served as a service coordinator for Campus Ministry. She has been involved in Regina Dominican dramas and musicals. Annice is a member of the Orchesis Dance Team and Spanish Club. She also participated on the track team and is currently a Tri-M Music Honor Society Board Member. Annice volunteers for Special Olympics and her Parish. Annice is a positive role model, polite, well spoken, and kind to all.

The Regina Dominican Medal was awarded to fifteen Regina Dominican seniors recognized for their outstanding performance. This special honor is conferred on seniors for academic excellence, service, and leadership within a subject area. The Principal’s Award recognizes the graduating senior who has maintained the highest level of academic achievement during her four- year attendance at Regina Dominican. This top scholar not only represents the best in scholastic achievement but also exemplifies excellence in leadership and service. Five Regina Dominican girls qualify for the Chicago History Fair Metro/State Finals with their senior division research papers: Kate Kurgan (Wilmette), Nicole Jaconetty (Chicago, 60656), Jacqueline Ave Maria (Morton Grove), Leesha Maliakal (Morton Grove) and Megan Broderick (Chicago 60631). Regina Dominican Hosts "Dramatic Dining" Event
The second annual Mother- Daughter Luncheon and Benefit, Dramatic Dining, was presented by Regina Dominican High School on April 6, 2008. Over two hundred mothers and daughters gathered for boutique shopping, a dramatic dining raffle and lunch. The ten tables raffled were exquisitely set with china, glassware, silver and decorative elements. Each table setting was based on a theme from a musical theater production: A Little Night Music, An American in Paris, Camelot, Carousel, Flower Drum Song, Madame Butterfly, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked and Brigadoon. Regina Art Students Recieve Awards
Eight Art students Regina Dominican participated in the student exhibit sponsored by the Wilmette Arts Guild held at the Wilmette Public Library. Two were awarded an Honorable Mention: senior, Angelica Del Toro (Chicago, Lincoln Square) for her watercolor painting, “A Sunset in Rome,” and junior, Nikki Toyama Winnetka) for her tempera self portrait entitled “Big Head.” Nikki’s painting was featured on the program cover for the awards ceremony. Regina Dominican Uses Smart Board Technology
Regina Dominican recently acquired four Smart Boards, also called “interactive presentation managers,” for use in the English, Social Studies, Science and Math Departments. This easy to use emergent technology provides for interactive student learning and problem solving in a world that is rapidly changing. Interactive is a key feature. For Regina the addition is academically advantageous because female students tend to learn visually. (story continued)

Regina Dominican Students Explore Diversity
In late January the Respect Club of Regina Dominican celebrated a student exchange with students from Thornton Township High School located in Harvey. A total of forty -four students, from both schools, participated. The purpose of this student exchange day was to celebrate diversity by creating community and exploring issues related to multiculturalism. Activities, led by Patricia Caine, PsyD., Regina school counselor, peaked student awareness about their similarities and differences; students learned how to build inclusive communities. "Regina Tweleve" First High School in the Nation to Visit the Emmett Till Trail
Twelve Regina Dominican students traveled on a “Civil Rights Adventure” during the Martin Luther King holiday week end in January. They visited important places associated with the Civil Rights Movement in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. The tour was initiated and led by social studies teacher Mike Small who offered the trip to guide students through an understanding of the American Civil Rights Movement. (story continued)

Regina Dominican Seniors Receive Honor
Twenty- one percent of the Regina Dominican High School Senior Class is in the top ten percent of 147,000 graduating Illinois high school seniors receive this honor of Illinois State Scholar. Selection is based on a combination of their exemplary college entrance examination scores and record of high school achievement. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) indicates these students have an especially high potential for success in college. (story continued)

Regina Dominican Junior to Serve on Archdiocesan Pastoral Council
On November 17, 2007 Erin Sexton 09(Chicago) received a long anticipated letter welcoming her as a member of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council (APC). She is one of many to apply and interview for one of the two Youth Delegate positions on the 70 person Council. The APC is comprised of two representatives from each Vicarate/Deanery, and representatives from Lay Oraganizations, the Consejo Pastoral, Deacons, Presbyteral Council, Archdiocesan Women’s Committee, Youth Council, Young Adults, Pastoral Associates, Sisters, Brothers and Religious Priests. The APC is the only consultative body to Cardinal George. (story continued)

Ring Day
Annual Ring Day on December 7 th, honored Regina Dominican’s ninety-eight seniors. They wore caps and gowns for the first time and began to sense the changes that will take place during the next several months. “T he Ring Day ceremony marks the beginning of the end,” said Verna Allworth, senior moderator. “It is a ‘rite of passage’ that gives seniors an opportunity to reflect on their experience as Regina students and to prepare for the final months leading up to graduation.” (story continued)

Claire Kaufman
Congratulations to Claire Kaufman(Wilmette), class of ’09, for receiving an honorable mention in the Redesign Your School Contest sponsored by American Architectural Foundation and Target Corporations. Claire was chosen from hundreds of applicants around the country who submitted designs. This has been the largest national design competition open to high school students. The United States spends billions of dollars building new schools every year and rarely are students ever asked for their opinion. This was a great opportunity for Claire and other high school students to address this very important topic. (story continued)

National Red Ribbon Campaign
During the week of October 22-26, 2007, Regina Dominican High School participated in the National Red Ribbon Campaign. The campaign began in 1985 as a result of the murder of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camerena. Agent Camerena was working undercover in Mexico when he was caught, tortured and murdered by drug traffickers. The Illinois Drug Education Alliance (IDEA), along with the Virginia Federation of Parents, organized the first National Red Ribbon Campaign to recognize Kiki’s fight. The red ribbon became a symbol of zero-tolerance for illegal drug use, and a commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. (story continued)

Marillac House
Marillac House on Chicago’s west side was the destination for thirty-five Regina Dominican Sophomores on October 9. They were quickly involved with a room full of five year olds creating colorful art-work. Spongy decorations landed not only on the art, but on the faces of children and student mentors as they worked together on the project! The joyful spirit was palpable! One little boy had a very sad face when the session ended. (story continued)

Freshman Retreat
It was not an ordinary school day for Regina Dominican Frosh as they gathered for prayer and fun at the annual retreat. One hundred six young women, new to Regina, spent time building class spirit and the relationships that would last a lifetime. Looking across the gym it was circle upon circle of conversation. Regina Student Wins Gaelic Park Award
Regina Dominican’s Nicole Jaconetty (2010-Chicago-60656) recently received a First Place cash Scholarship Award in the annual Gaelic Park Essay Contest, High School Division. Initiated in 1998 the contest has offered student writers an opportunity to celebrate their cultural heritage by writing about the Irish-American experience. Regina Dominican Earns Top Honors In Illinois History Expo
Regina Dominican student Kristen Kelly ( Park Ridge) earned Highest Honors in the Illinois State History Expo on May 19 in Springfield. Her project is titled “A Man and His Plan: Daniel Burnham and His 1909 Chicago Plan.” Kristen will advance to the National History Day to be held at the University of Maryland in June. Regina Celebrates "Earth Season"
During the Annual May 2 nd Earth Rally at Regina Dominican students enjoyed the beauty of the day, original songs by Kim Schaefer (’08 Park Ridge) and creative earth activities. Potting plants and painting pots was led by Ale Flores and Stephanie Cuellar (’07, Winnetka); tie dye shirts were inspired by Nicky Valenzuela (’07, Morton Grove); eyebrow threading was offered by Danielle Freeman (’07, Chicago-Lakeview). Lucy Lindgren (’07, Chicago-Lincoln Park) and Lisa Ryu (’07, Wilmette) displayed and sold original jewelry; Meaghan Morris (’09, Glenview) and Alexandra Pyles (Chicago-Wildwood) offered greeting cards and stationery. A Hybrid Honda was shown by Maria Gobbi ( Evanston) to remind students of the need for fuel economy. (story continued)

Tri-M Sponsors a Fun Musical Evening
The Tri-M International Music Honor Society presents Rockapalloza Saturday night, May 5, 2007 in the Regina Dominican Auditorium, 7-10 PM. Included in the night's entertainment are: piano and vocals written and performed by Julienne Samuels, guitar and vocals written and performed by Kim Schaefer, The Secret Minority and a Mystery Band. Regina Respect Club Visits De La Salle
On April 23 the Respect Club of Regina Dominican High School visited one of its sister schools: De La Salle High School in Chicago. The purpose of the visit was to promote understanding, respect and awareness of diverse cultures in the Metropolitan Chicago area. Colleen Nelson (’08 Mt. Prospect) was happy to meet new friends. She says, “Even though we come from all over the city and suburbs we have common interests and experiences. A day like this gives us a chance to learn from each other.” Visiting students were shadows in classes at De La Salle. (story continued)

Dramatic Dining
Dramatic Dining
was the title, and the experience, for the first annual Mother-Daughter Luncheon and Benefit presented by Regina Dominican College Preparatory School. Each table setting was based on a theme from a musical theater production: South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Annie Get You Gun, White Christmas, 1776 and Grease. Among table-setting winners were: Karen Interrante ( Chicago), Susan Hartnett ( Evanston), and Sarah Thorrens ( Deerfield). Sister Adrienne Piennette, President of Regina, won the Cubs tickets. Regina Dominican Students Make Music in Europe

Regina Models Trashy Fashions

Thirty-six young women from Regina Dominican College Preparatory participated in the April 19 Trashy Fashion Show sponsored by the Solid Waste Agency of North CookCounty (SWANCC). Some Regina students designed and assembled; others modeled the unique “clothing” and accessories made from recycled materials such as pop caps, baggies, packaging material and guitar picks. Regina Dominican young women gathered at an important assembly on Friday, April 20 for the annual Wellness Day. Ms. Lisa Tomasetti, the first speaker, talked about Cystic Fibrosis and the Cystic Fibrosis Walk in which students were encouraged to participate. (story continued)

Regina Participates in Leadership Training

In early March, students from Regina Dominican, New Trier and North Shore Country Day joined together for a Snowball retreat weekend to develop leadership and teamwork skills, gain self-knowledge and meet peers from other schools. Katie Clark, Regina's social worker, was among those who organized the event; Regina teachers Nereida Pereda and Shannon Reuland served as adult leaders. Students at Regina were thrilled to have adults from their school community participate in this program. (story continued)

Regina Dominican Recognizes Donors

There was a smile on Sister Adrienne Piennette’s face as faithful donors to Regina Dominican arrived for the Donor Appreciation reception and entertainment, Sunday, March 25. During the evening Sister Adrienne, President of Regina Dominican College Preparatory School, thanked parents of current and former students, alumnae and all who are part of the “Regina family at large” for their “continuing generosity of spirit and treasure.” Many who attended have a long history with Regina and come each year for this festive occasion. Regina Golf Team Enters Hall of Fame

The 1982 Regina Golf Team and Coach Vi Reego were inducted into the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Hall of Fame on March 18, 2007. President's Brunch: Success for Regina Dominican

Winter cold did not prevent one hundred thirty three people from gathering for the Regina Dominican President’s Brunch at the Sunset Ridge Club on February 11. The elegant setting and splendid food was in harmony with the cheerful guests who came to celebrate the annual event. Almost $21,000 was raised. (story continued)

Ash Wednesday at Regina Dominican
The Regina Dominican High School community celebrated Ash Wednesday with a prayer service in O’Shaughnessy Auditorium. Led by Dr. Donna Cascino, Campus Minister, the service included the traditional Scripture readings from Joel and from the Gospel of Matthew that call people to prayer, fasting and a change of heart. She reminded everyone of the changes that students experience: ”Frosh tell us that change is difficult. It is difficult being a freshman in a new school, learning new things. Seniors tell us that this is a hard year because of all of the changes that happen in their lives, changes that may lead to new horizons. (story continued)

Safe Driving
Mrs. Kathy Rzany, Principal of Regina Dominican, spoke to the girls about safe driving. The recent deaths of teens in automobile accidents prompted her to express her concern and to encourage them to be careful and attentive when driving. At one time she had taught two young women who were killed in a car crash, so she knows first hand the tragedy of a young life lost. She knows what these losses mean to a school. (story continued)

Art Club

Military personnel over seas need all the support they can get. That is why the Regina Dominican Art club sent art supplies for service men and women to use during their free time. Chaplain (CPT) Jerry Johnson has set up an art room for the troops at a base in Italy and sent out a request for “any and all arts and crafts supplies.” Though the project is being coordinated in Italy, supplies will go to other locations. International Ambassadors

Regina Dominican Sophomores, Margeaux Methavicht (Chicago-60613), Molly Gabinski (Chicago-60657), and Junior, Mia Gutsell (Chicago-60646) have been accepted into the People to People International Ambassadors Program. Christmas Concert

Can-Can, Carol of the Bells and O Holy Night were among the pieces performed by the Regina Dominican Orchestra, Chorale and Chamber Choir at the annual Christmas concert on held December 15 in O’Shaughnessy Auditorium. Both choirs joined in the traditional Lo How a Rose E’er Blooming while lit candles added to the ambience of the evening; they were accompanied by the string ensemble: Amelia Salutz (Chicago-Rogers Park) and Soldam Kim (Skokie), violin; Jung Min Lee (Northbrook), viola; Megan Yorath (Chicago-Sauganash), cello; Annice Coughlan (Chicago-Norwood Park), bass. Among audience favorites was the arrangement of “Fruit Cake” sung by the Chorale, Chamber Choir and alumnae members from years past. (story continued)

Ring Day Marks Change for Regina Seniors

The annual Ring Day at Regina Dominican, on December 8 th, honored seniors as they wore caps and gowns for the first time and reflected on the changes that will take place during the next few months. “There are lessons to be learned here,” said Donna Cascino, Campus Minister: “Growth and change happen and help seniors grow into adulthood . These changes can be painful, but gratifying and they learn new things. This time of transition becomes a blessing to them as well as a memory. Regina Dominican Partners with Siena Heights University

Thursday, November 2, 2006 marked an historic day for Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan and Regina Dominican College Preparatory Catholic School for women in Wilmette, Illinois. The two schools have formed a partnership for the purpose of aiding college bound Seniors who wish to pursue a Liberal Arts education at Siena with affordable tuition. Both institutions are steeped in the rich tradition of Catholic education and are sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters. (story continued)

National Honor Society Welcomes Thirty-six Regina Students

Thirty -six Regina Dominican juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) during a special candle-lighting ceremony on November 1. Proud families attended the ceremony prepared by NHS members and by moderators Kim Fermoyle and Kate Houston. President of NHS, Anne Mersch and Vice-president Margaret Shinnick presided. Regina Dominican Gives Tribute for Lasting Legacy

As Sheila and Robert Hulseman ( Winnetka) were honored at the annual Regina Dominican Black and White Ball on October 27 they spoke in glowing terms about the school and about the quality education their daughters and granddaughters have experienced through the years. “I am in awe,” said Mr. Hulseman. “ Regina is like an angel choir; maybe you can hear it.” He commended the many parents of Regina students who were present for choosing Regina. Red Ribbon Week at Regina Dominican

During the week of October 23-27, 2006, Regina Dominican High School participated in the National Red Ribbon Campaign. The campaign began in 1985 as a result of the murder of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camerena. Agent Camerena was working undercover in Mexico when he was caught, tortured and murdered by drug traffickers. The Illinois Drug Education Alliance (IDEA), along with the Virginia Federation of Parents, organized the first National Red Ribbon Campaign to recognize Kiki’s fight. The red ribbon became a symbol of zero-tolerance for illegal drug use, and a commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. (story continued)

Regina Dominican: Leading in Leadership

On Friday, October 6 th, Regina Dominican High School held its annual Junior High Leadership Conference. Over 120 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade students attended, representing 16 different Junior High Schools, both public and private. The workshops consisted of Leadership Skills, Communications, Team Building and Public Speaking. Members of Regina Dominican’s Student Council ran all the workshops. Awards were given at the end of the day to students who demonstrated excellent skills in all areas of the workshop. (story continued)

Environmental Club Beautifies School

Fall planting is only one of the projects of the Regina Dominican students who are conscious of our natural world. The science classes and Environmental Club have been tending the earth with various projects since last spring, and in each season they work with the natural cycles of plants, trees and flowers. Regina Dominican Students Recognized for Academic Honors

Regina Dominican seniors, juniors and sophomores were recognized for achievements in the 2005-2006 year at the Fall Honors Assembly held on October 4. One hundred twenty-one students were recognized for Highest Honors maintaining a grade point average of 4.5 or above. Another sixty-one earned High Honors for their cumulative grade point average of 4.0 to 4.9. (story continued)

Oprah Producer to Speak at Regina Dominican Career Day October 20

Producer for the Oprah Winfrey show, Tara Montgomery, will be the keynote speaker for the Regina Dominican High School Career Day scheduled for October 20, 2006. In efforts to motivate and inspire the young women at Regina she will talk about her career as it unfolded through the years and her passion for the work she does now. As a woman with varied experiences in broadcasting she has much to offer girls who are seeking guidance in thinking about their future careers. (story continued)
