Description

Three levels of competition on four teams offers all students of varying abilities the opportunity to participate. Practices are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout the season.

Season

Tryouts November 3, 2008 Includes Varsity holiday tournaments over Thanksgiving and Christmas vacations.

Basketball is a competitive program and cuts are made at all levels: Freshman A & B, JV, and Varsity

Head Coach

Head Varsity Coach - Jim Russo begins his 6th year coaching Regina Basketball and his third season as head coach. He led the 2002-03 Regina basketball squad to the IHSA third-place championship and earned Coach of the Year honors from both Lerner Newspaper and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. As an AAU coach, Russo coached three Final Four teams and six Top 10 teams on a national level from 1999 to 2001. His high school coaching experience also includes two years at Holy Cross High School in 1996 and 1997. Russo has coached all four of his children in either high school or AAU, including former varsity player, Li bby Russo ('07). Jim is in the concrete cutting business.

Assistant Varsity Coach – Nick Russo is a 2004 graduate of Ripon College , where he earned a B.S. in Exercise Science and a minor in Education, and was on the Honor Roll. As 2000 graduate of Holy Cross High School , Nick played both basketball and football, and was a two-time All Conference tight end. In 1996, his AAU team was a national championship qualifier. Nick's summer camp and traveling team coaching experiences include positions with Carmel High School , Ripon College , Illinois Lady Thunder and Regina Dominican High School . Nick is the son of Head Coach Jim Russo and is currently an elementry school PE Teacher.

Freshman Head Coach- Jason Palmer enters his first year as head coach. Coach Palmer is a 1988 graduate of Luther High School South and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Daley College in 1996. He coached in the Lutheran Sports Association of Illinois where his teams won three State Championships in 2000, 02 and 03, in addition to four consecutive Chicagoland Championships from 2000 to 2003. Jason works as a freelance journalist and is a native of the Chatham community on the South Side of Chicago where he still resides.

BOWLING

Description

Bowling is a participative sport and no cuts were made this season. Varsity and JV matches are held two to three times per week at local Bowling establishments, with occasional practice times.

Tryouts: November 11, 2008
Season: November- February ( IHSA State Finals)

Teams

Bowlers of all levels and expertise are welcome and are encouraged to participate. As in all Regina sports, each athlete must have a physical on file with the school.

POMS/DANCE

Description

Poms performs throughout the school year at various athletic events and Regina pep assemblies. The Poms/Dance team also performs at competitive events and occasionally at other high school and collegiate venues.

Tryouts were held this year at the end of August and the team of 18 girls practices twice a week throughout the school year.
