English
Communication, both oral and written, is essential to a person as a social being. It enables her to be clear with others, to understand them and to share knowledge, experience and ideals. Growth in the art of communication is an integral part of the development of a mature individual.
Communication depends upon perceptive thinking and precise expression. Through leveled and integrated courses in literature, language, and composition, we strive to develop a thinking individual capable of expressing her ideas with clarity and effectiveness.
The English Department also recognizes its spiritual, moral and social responsibilities to students. Through study of themes in literature, a student is encouraged to expand and strengthen her conscience, to explore and to analyze multi-cultural value systems, and to reinforce her faith in God and in humanity.
Structured group activities help develop positive, trusting interpersonal relationships; creative projects provide opportunities for students to develop qualities of good leadership and cooperation. Thus, the English Department fosters a deeper understanding of communication on all levels: intellectual, spiritual, social, and personal.
